The taste

A creamy iced or hot latte you make at home.

Hōjicha is Japanese green tea, slow-toasted until honeyed and amber. We grind it to a fine powder and soften it with Madagascan vanilla. Notes of toasted chestnut, warm caramel and gentle woodsmoke. Naturally low in caffeine, about 20mg a cup.

How to make it: whisk one teaspoon with a splash of hot water until smooth, then pour over hot or iced milk of your choice.

Ingredients: hōjicha green tea, organic coconut sugar, natural Madagascan vanilla flavouring, pink Himalayan salt.

Founding batch pre-order: ships by Friday 6 November.

How to make it

Hot. Add one teaspoon (2.5g) to a cup. Whisk with a splash of hot water until smooth, then top with 200ml steamed milk.

Iced. Whisk one teaspoon with a splash of hot water, pour over ice, then top with cold milk.

Prefer it stronger? Use two teaspoons. Any milk works — oat is the creamiest.

  3. Step 03

    Pour

Not instead of everything. Just better timed.

Keep your morning espresso if you love it. Hōcha is for the moments you want clarity without the edge.

Questions

Before you pour.

Anything else? Email zoey@drinkhocha.com — a real person replies.

What does hōjicha taste like?

Toasty and mellow — toasted chestnut, warm caramel and a gentle woodsmoke, softened by Madagascan vanilla. Smoother and far less bitter than matcha.

Does it contain caffeine?

A little. About 20mg per serving (one teaspoon, 2.5g) — roughly a fifth of a mug of instant coffee. Use two teaspoons and it's about 40mg.

How is it different from matcha?

Both are Japanese green tea powders. Matcha is shade-grown and unroasted — vivid green, grassy and higher in caffeine. Hōjicha is roasted — amber, nutty and naturally gentler.

How many servings are in a pouch?

About 30. Each 75g pouch makes roughly 30 lattes at one teaspoon (2.5g), or 15 stronger ones at two.

How do I make it?

Whisk one teaspoon with a splash of hot water until smooth, then top with 200ml of steamed milk. For iced, pour the whisked base over ice and cold milk.

Can I drink it in the evening?

Many people do. It does contain about 20mg of caffeine, so if you're sensitive, enjoy it earlier in the day or try half a teaspoon for a lighter cup.

Which milk works best?

Any. Oat is the creamiest; whole milk is classic; almond and coconut are lovely iced.

Is it sweetened?

Lightly, with coconut sugar — under 1g of sugars per serving. Add a little more if you like it sweeter.

Is it vegan?

Yes. Every ingredient is plant-based.

When will my pre-order arrive?

Founding-batch pre-orders are posted by Friday 6 November with Royal Mail Tracked 48. UK delivery is £3.95, or free on orders over £35.

Can I cancel or return?

You can cancel a pre-order any time before it ships for a full refund. Unopened pouches can be returned within 14 days of arrival. Read the full policy.
